CHAPTER 14

♥ She made an OUTLINE.

Hayes curses when I step out of the fitting room wearing the outfit he specifically picked for me—otherwise known as an elegant forest green dress complete with waterfall skirt, lace trim, and off-the-shoulder sleeves. I loved it before the exact second he saw me. And cursed.

And closed his eyes.

And pressed his fist to his mouth.

Half-frantic, I look at myself to make sure I’ve not screwed something up. Leave it to me to fail at putting a dress on. The skirt’s not stuck in my underwear. It is absolutely right-side out. Maybe the peeky hole below the high neckline is too immodest? Either that or the fact my bra straps are showing?

It’s an off-the-shoulder dress.

He had to know they’d be showing.

Unless he expected me to take my bra off?

That’s indecent. How dare he?

Dragging a breath into his lungs, Hayes opens his eyes. “Freckles.”

I stare at him.

He drops his hand to his side. “How much is that? You need it.”

“You like it?” I ask.

“I love it. Is it comfortable? Is the fabric or seams weird at all?”

I smooth my hands down the shorter front of the skirt, take stock of any seams I can feel. Exactly zero. Wonderful. “It’s fine.” My brow furrows. “Why’d you say freckles?”

He lifts a finger, pointing at one shoulder. “Secret freckles.”

Secret…

I laugh. “I’m a redhead. I have freckles, Hayes.” Pointing at my cheeks, I step up to him. “See?”

His throat bobs. “No. You clearly have never been outside.” His brow furrows, and he cups my chin, squinting. “Wait. I see one. Three. Holy—” He curses. “You’re hiding them all. How are the ones on your shoulders more defined?”

“I sunburned my shoulders last summer. I was better about protecting my face.”

“Huh,” he mumbles, caressing his thumb against my cheek, over the only prominent freckle I know I have. “You keep getting cuter. Is that allowed?”

“I haven’t been arrested yet.”

“Probably because you don’t go outside. The authorities haven’t been able to track you.” His hand slips from my skin, and I instantly miss the warmth.

I think that means I like him.

But I’m also standing right in front of him with my head all the way back just to meet his eyes…hence the stuff that people do when they like each other is nowhere near my thoughts. For fear of bodily harm.

Can you like someone and not be interested in things and stuff all the time? I’ve never really looked at anyone and wanted to do anything. Hayes is the first person I’ve ever even wanted to kiss.

Because of silly rom-com magic.

Obviously.

Taking a step back, I clear my throat and drop my attention to my socks. “You think I should get it?”

“Either you get it or I get it for you. You’ve got a birthday coming up, don’t you? I think so. Yeah, that’s a great excuse. Either you get it or happy birthday.”

“Incorrigible,” I murmur. “I can buy my own clothes, and I don’t need anything for my birthday. You met my parents. They’re probably planning to get me a country.
